SUSTAINABILITY AND TALENT ATTRACTION TAKE CENTER STAGE AT THE CLOSING OF THE 23RD ADVANCED AND DIGITAL MANUFACTURING CONGRESS

27 October, 2023The 23rd edition of the most relevant industrial congress held in Spain came to a close in San Sebastián. Over 550 participants from companies, technological centers, and universities in the field of advanced and digital manufacturing took part. During the past three days, attendees witnessed presentations and discussions showcasing the latest developments in the realm of advanced industry.

The morning began with a session dedicated to the challenges of sustainability in the 21st-century industry. This session featured contributions from the researcher and scientific communicator Antonio Turiel and Andoitz Aranburu, the corporate innovation manager at FAGOR ARRASATE.

Following this, a panel of professionals from LANTEK, NIDEC ARISA, and MIK discussed the challenge of attracting young talent to the world of advanced manufacturing and machine tools in a session on talent attraction. Joan Clotet, an expert in digital innovation and talent, then delivered a presentation on new competencies and challenges in people management. Providing a different perspective, the renowned physicist and science communicator José Luis Crespo, also known as Quantum Fracture, talked about digital marketing and communication when reaching out to a younger audience.

The closing keynote address was given by Xavier Marcet, a consultant in strategy, innovation, and organizational transformation, who presented on the importance of leadership and talent management.

During the closing ceremony, five awards were presented. The AFM-SIF Award for the best final project related to the advanced and digital manufacturing sector went to Mikel Magunacelaya, a student at TECNUN – University of Navarra, for his project titled "Theoretical Model for Predicting Rotation Errors in High-Precision Grinding Machine Heads."

The company awarded for the most innovative presentation was IBARMIA, for their communication titled "Thermal Compensation of Machines Based on Direct Measurements of Machine Body Deformations," authored by Arrate Olaiz. The award was presented by Ane Insausti, Deputy for Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.

In this case, the jury recognized the industrial application of a complex technical work, especially the virtual validation prior to implementation on a real machine. Additionally, the excellent communication of the work was acknowledged.

The third award, for the best poster presentation, was given to Víctor Llamas of Eurecat for his communication titled "Advanced Photonics for Needle and Plate Control in Zero-Defect Textile Production." The jury appreciated the quality of the work, its industrial application, and the graphical support used in the poster.

Furthermore, the congress awarded a fourth prize for the best presentation in Basque, which was given to Beñat Iñigo from IDEKO for his presentation titled "Volumetric Error Characterization and Uncertainty Analysis in Temperature Changes."

The jury praised the excellent use of technical terms in Basque in a complex work, presented in an engaging and well-structured manner. They also noted that it was a high-quality, technologically advanced presentation that highlighted the strength of the Basque language in addressing scientific and technical issues.

Finally, the award for the best presentation by the scientific and technical community went to Gorka Ortiz de Zárate Bengoa from Mondragon Unibertsitatea for his work titled "Digital Twin of the Broaching Process for Manufacturing Critical Aerospace and Automotive Components." The award was presented by Mikel Amundarain, Deputy Minister of Industry for the Basque Government.

This presentation delved into high-technical content, applying analytical, numerical, and mechanical models to monitor, detect, and predict tool condition, all presented clearly and well-executed.
