On July 4, CIEMAT held a meeting between the group of materials of CEIDEN (Technological Platform of Nuclear Energy of fission) and the energy innovation group of MATERPLAT (Spanish Technological Platform of Advanced Materials and Nanomaterials). The group of CEIDEN materials, coordinated by Marta Serrano of CIEMAT and Federico Navarro of TECNATOM, was launched at the 34th meeting of its Managing Council, with the main mission of enhancing the Spanish capabilities in nuclear materials, both metallic and polymer and concrete.
Among the objectives of this group is to establish interactions with other technological platforms on materials issues, among which MATERPLAT and in particular, with its energy materials innovation group. Within the framework of this objective, it was decided to launch this joint meeting as a first starting point to establish a communication and exchange of ideas between both communities.
The opening of the meeting was carried out by Javier Dies (CSN advisor) and José Manuel Pérez Morales (director of the CIEMAT technology department). Subsequently, Miguel Ángel Rodiel (Technology Director of the IMDEA Materials Institute and MATERPLAT Coordinator) presented the MATERPLAT and Marta Serrano (CIEMAT) platforms for the materials and energy groups of CEIDEN and MATERPLAT, respectively.
The presentations that took place later, exposed topics of interest in materials both in the nuclear field and in the field of renewable energies. Thus, Naiara Zubizarreta presented a summary of the different Spanish capacities in additive manufacturing within the platform ADDIMAT (Spanish Association of Additive Manufacturing Technologies and 3D), where it is worth noting the enormous growth of this sector in Spain. José Manuel Pérez Morales (CIEMAT) presented the New European Joint Nuclear Materials Program, coordinated by Lorenzo Malerba of CIEMAT, which is preparing to respond to the call of EURATOM NFRP 08. Then, Álvaro Soto from ENSA exposed the problem of design and loading dual-purpose radioactive waste containers (transport and storage). José Manuel Puente of ArcelorMittal emphasized the capabilities of the use of steel in offshore wind constructions, where Spain plays a very important role in the large international projects led by Iberdrola and other actors. To conclude the meeting Ángel Ibarra from CIEMAT presented the DONES project as a solution to the need to qualify fusion materials under real operating conditions.
